text: When looking into the house of Phathilhumi, I noticed bedding on the rice pounder and when I asked what it was for. I was told that his elder brother's son and four other boys all slept there. There are no special young men's houses in the village and young unmarried boys form little groups and sleep together in private houses. 'They are all friends and so they come here' Phathilhumi told me. He himself has at present only a baby son and he sleeps with his wife behind a small screen which adjoins the pounder. There is no parallel arrangement for girls and they remain with their parents until marriage.
