text: Indirect taxation is levied in the form of villagers being expected to keep their bridle paths clear, to carry loads for Government officers when they are out on tour, to supply rice to them when it is needed and to bring (113) in timber and thatch for the repair of Government buildings. These materials and this work are paid for by Government but at slightly reduced rates. Indirect taxation of this type would obviously become an abuse once an area was developed, but at present with so few government servants, it is rare for a village to be called upon for such services more than once or twice a year.
