text: This evening as we sat round the fire the interpreters remarked on the friendliness of the people on this tour. Never before, they said, could they mingle so freely with the crowd outside the stockade. They attribute this change largely to the war, the constant going and coming of planes and the dropping of stores to outposts by parachute. It seems to have convinced the wilder tribes that Government, which they identify with the army, is much closer and more powerful than they thought. The planes gave them a feeling of helplessness.
