text: 1st March, Tuesday. Had considerable difficulty in procuring coolies this morning the Nagas declaring they were willing enough to serve me but that they dare not do so as they had been threatened with severe punishment by the Muneepoorees if they were to be found giving me either coolies or supplies the Munipoorees however denied having given any such orders but be that as it may no sooner did the Nagas hear Thongal Major assure me that there must be some mistake about it and that it was probably only a bit of Naga roguery then the coolies came forward at once and I hastened to make up for lost time. We had a most tedious march today over a difficult road and greater portion a mere goats path scarce 6" (inches) in breadth over huge boulders of rock and along precipitious khunds and after going over about 10 miles of this darkness over took us some two miles short of the village of Tawemah (or Phoocelong) and finding it was utterly impossible to reach the village we encamped in the jungle as best we could which was not very comfortably, for my only shelter was a water proof sheet with few branches spread over it and I would add for the benefit of my successor that a tent (a small one similar to that which in the Punjab the call the cashmere tent) is absolutely necessary and my only reason for not bringing one was because I was unable to procure one in time and the tents purchased by my predecessor were such unwieldy things they would have required an army of coolies to carry them besides which there would not positively have been room to pitch them.
