text: The excellence of the crop of sali dhan and the increasing freedom of exchange between Kohima and outlying districts combined to reduce the price of rice, and the price of salt has also fallen and is expected to come down still lower. The exorbitant wages demanded by the Nagas for coolie labour hinder progress in many directions. The competition of the Transport Department doubtless tends materially to enhance the price of labour, and possibly wages may fall, if, as is contemplated, the provisioning of the troops in Kohima be left to private enterprise after the year 1886-87.
