text: The Konyaks built -- and, indeed, still build -- their villages on ridges or spurs from which the land drops sharply into the surrounding valleys. Strategic considerations were certainly uppermost in the minds of most village founders, but the presence of an adequate water supply was also considered an important factor in determining the site of a new village. It is due to the location of springs that many villages were built on saddles or ledges situated a few hundred feet below the highest point of the ridge.
