text: The felled trees and cut undergrowth were left to dry for several weeks and then set on fire. In January smoke rose from many of the hill slopes of the Konyak country, and on windless days a dense gray haze enveloped the landscape. The ashes of the burnt jungle improved the soil, and as the Konyaks did not use any other type of manure, they relied heavily on the fertilizing power of this wood ash.
