text: Both the political and the magical powers of Angs discouraged people of lower status from crossing them. Angs of villages such as Mon and Chi were in the habit of taking by force and with impunity any commoner girl of their domain whom they fancied. They would send men to bring the girl to their house at night and paid no bride price to the parents. If indulged in to excess, such practices would arouse the wrath of a chief's subjects, and it was not unheard of for a chief who had proven unduly overbearing to be assassinated.
