text: Among most Naga tribes high social status could be gained by the giving of feasts of merit, but among Konyaks there was only limited scope for the attainment of prestige by public displays and the perpetuation of such achievements by outward symbols. No individual effort in the quest for social advancement was allowed to cancel or blur the unalterable distinction between chiefs and commoners, and no individual could ever cross the class barrier.
