text: The reserve maintained in public by married couples lessened with the years, and middle-aged spouses seemed to be at ease even in front of strangers. Despite the lack of demonstrative endearments, many couples were obviously united by strong ties of affection and loyalty. There were several men who had refused to banish their leprosy-smitten wives and continued to live side by side with an ailing spouse. Similarly, there were husbands of barren women who had resigned themselves to childlessness rather than separate from a cherished wife.
