text: As Gawang punished those guilty of misdeeds, so he rewarded those who excelled in social virtues. Hospitality and generosity were considered highly meritorious, and a rich man of Wakching at whose hearth there was always a place for hungry guests and whose traditional gifts to affines were exceptionally valuable told me that he did not mind spending his wealth in this way because he believed that ultimately Gawang would reward his liberality.
