text: Although this had not been an isolated case, the buying and selling of slaves was not considered quite right by my Wakching friends. Perhaps it was that they had already unconsciously adopted a few of the standards of the plains, to which they lived so near; for they told me indignantly that the people of several villages to the south used to sell even their own brothers and clansmen. But this raises the wrath of Gawang, the god of heaven, who punishes the offenders even during their life-time. Whoever sells a human being into slavery will never have a son, and will die early.
