text: That evening Major Williams thought it would be a good idea to hold a trial alarm to train the porters in case of an attack on our camp. At a given signal they rushed with spears, shields, and dao to the stockade, forming a second and a living wall. In spite of the fatigue of the most exhausting day's march, their tense fierce faces showed clearly that they were ready to throw themselves (117) on any enemy.
