text: Passing Simaluguri and Naginimara, familiar places though hardly recognizable after thirty-four years of development, we came to a pool where a group of men were fishing. They did not look like plains people, and when we stopped I recognized them as Konyaks. They had blackened their teeth and cut their hair in the style of men of the Thenkoh group, but surprisingly they no longer spoke any of the Konyak dialects but only the Assamese of their neighbours. They told me that they had been settled in the plains for a long time.
