text: I had heard already that Shankok had died less than two years ago, and his death cast a cloud over the otherwise so joyous occasion of my return to Wakching. As we came to his old house his eldest son, Shoupa, came out and greeted my companion Bedi as an old friend. He was dressed in white trousers and a shirt, and yet resembled Shankok -- so much indeed that I frequently made the mistake of addressing him as Shankok. Speaking in fluent (246) English, he welcomed me very warmly and told me how delighted he was to see me as his father had often spoken about me.
